Former world champion Toni Kroos is not thinking about a comeback in the national football team for the home European Championship next year. “Let me put it this way: I made a conscious decision,” said the Real Madrid midfielder after the 2-0 win in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday at Chelsea on Amazon Prime Video.

He “didn’t just take his resignation out of the gut”, but he had “maturely considered it”. “And when a North German makes such a decision, it’s pretty much set in stone,” added the native of Greifswald, “and that’s still the case.”

Amazon expert Matthias Sammer had previously said when asked about Kroos’s possible return to the national team: “In the end, Toni sends the signals, that’s not a question. But if I had to imagine myself in a responsible position, then if he were already back – that’s clear.” Kroos, who had overheard these words, said with a laugh: “Thank God that’s not the case!”

Sammer raved about the 33-year-old after Kroos’ appearance at Stamford Bridge. The former Bayern professional is “one of the greatest we’ve ever had,” said the 1996 European champion: “Toni as a person and as an athlete: he’s a superstar!” Kroos’ former Bayern team-mate Mario Gomez also enthused: “He’s a strategist, that’s something every team wants”. In addition, Kroos is “a great comrade”. (dpa)
