Toni Kroos recently extended his contract with Real Madrid by a year. The fun is still there, explains the 33-year-old. But when something specific happens, he doesn’t want to play anymore.

Toni Kroos does not want to unnecessarily prolong his football career. There are “one or the other negative example, because you just can’t let go of football,” said the 2014 world champion on TV broadcaster RTL: “If you’re no longer the player that people actually have in mind .” He “just doesn’t want that to happen to me”, so his claim is to stop “at a really good level” at some point.

Kroos recently extended his expiring contract with Spanish top club Real Madrid by a year until June 30, 2024. He “had the feeling that this season went just as well as the last nine seasons in Madrid,” explained the 33-year-old: “Why shouldn’t the next season go as well? And what’s more, it’s still like for fun.”

The former Bundesliga professional from Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen revealed that his wife Jessica didn’t give him any guidelines when it came to the decision: “”Do what you want,” she said to me, and I stuck to it.” (dpa)
