KTMB Boosts 2027 Capacity With Record 1.5 Million Rail Tickets

Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad is offering a record 1,573,872 tickets for early 2027 travel, marking a 39 percent jump in capacity. The rail operator is adding daily trips, introducing new hubs at Subang Jaya and Kuala Lumpur’s old station, and restructuring long-distance routes starting January 1.

Record Ticket Sales and Capacity Expansion for Early 2027

Rail travelers face a massive expansion in capacity as Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad prepares to roll out its largest-ever seat offering for the first quarter of the year. The network will provide 1,573,872 seats across the Electric Train Service and the Ekspres Rakyat Timuran from January to March 2027, according to official announcements from the operator. That figure represents a 39 percent surge over the 1,131,500 seats made available during the corresponding months in 2026.

Of the total inventory, the vast majority belongs to the electric fleet. The Electric Train Service accounts for 1,520,592 seats, while the Ekspres Rakyat Timuran holds the remaining 53,280. Operators note that early sales help the public plan around upcoming school breaks, public holidays, and festive seasons.

The figure exceeds the 1,131,500 seats offered for the same period in 2026, making it the highest number KTMB has ever provided for the first three months of the following year.

Ticket distribution will happen in two waves. Sales for travel in January and February open at noon on November 2, releasing 1,035,384 seats. Tickets for March departures go on sale at noon on December 1, adding another 538,488 seats. Commuters can purchase passes through the KITS Style app or the official booking portal.

Subang Jaya and Old Kuala Lumpur Station Become New ETS Hubs

To combat heavy passenger concentration at KL Sentral during peak hours and busy travel periods, the operator is decentralizing departures. Subang Jaya and KL’s old train station will transition into additional long-distance hubs next year. The addition widens rail access, giving travelers closer boarding options that bypass the central terminal.

Daily trip frequencies are climbing in tandem with the physical expansion. Weekday service from Monday through Thursday will increase from 44 scheduled runs to 50. Friday through Sunday frequency jumps to 58 trips daily, injecting up to 14 additional services into the daily timetable. The JB Sentral to KL Sentral corridor also sees expanded service, with daily runs climbing from eight to 12.

With capacity and frequency scaling upward, projected ridership is expected to match the growth. ETS ridership is projected to grow 6.5 per cent, reaching 6.28 million passengers in 2027 compared to 5.9 million during the current year.

Mandatory Transfers at KL Sentral for Long-Distance Sectors

While capacity increases, cross-country passengers face a major operational shift. Direct through-travel on a single train between the northern and southern sectors will end on January 1, 2027. Passengers traveling between JB Sentral and Butterworth, JB Sentral and Padang Besar, or Butterworth and Segamat—along with all reverse journeys—must change trains at KL Sentral.

Direct through-travel on the same train for the JB Sentral-Butterworth, JB Sentral-Padang Besar and Butterworth-Segamat routes, and in the reverse direction, will no longer be offered. Passengers on these routes must change trains at KL Sentral.

Commuters booking multi-sector trips must initially purchase two separate tickets—one for each leg of the journey. However, the operator is upgrading its ticketing infrastructure to support integrated single-transaction purchases from December.

Travelers booking long-distance routes are advised to inspect schedules across both train services carefully and build in generous transfer windows at KL Sentral to account for the mandatory switch.
