Kufra: Unprecedented rains in 70 years, damage to homes and infrastructure

The Director of the Ambulance and Emergency Department, Kufra Branch, “Ibrahim Balhassan,” reported that 26 cases were removed from the city hospital due to heavy rains and its being out of service.

“Balhassan” added in special statements to Al-Ahrar that they transferred these cases to Al-Hawari Rural Hospital and some other clinics, saying that they recorded minor injuries among citizens due to the rains that caused the collapse of many houses.

The Director of the Ambulance and Emergency Department indicated that they are on alert and prepared for any emergency that occurs, according to his expression.

Large quantities

For his part, the spokesman for the Meteorological Center, Mohi El-Din Ali, confirmed to Al-Ahrar that they recorded 46 millimeters of rainfall in Kufra, stressing that this is a percentage that has not been recorded in the city for 70 years, according to him.

Houses damaged

The mayor of Kufra, Abdul Rahman Aqoub, also revealed that some citizens’ homes were damaged due to the heavy rains, saying that a number of families had moved to schools.

Aqoub added to Al-Ahrar that there are more than 700 refugee families from Sudan currently living in the open, adding that they are facing a shortage of water-pumping vehicles.

Hospital out of service

Kufra Municipality spokesman Abdullah Suleiman confirmed that the city hospital was out of service due to large amounts of rainwater entering the ground floor.

Suleiman added to Al-Ahrar on Sunday that all patients were transferred from the hospital and distributed to other clinics and health centers, indicating that the rains and strong winds in Kufra caused material losses to citizens’ property.

Power grid damage

For his part, the spokesman for the Kufra Municipality, Abdullah Suleiman, confirmed to Al-Ahrar: The electricity network was severely damaged due to the unprecedented rains in the city.

Suleiman told Al-Ahrar that the city of Kufra cannot tolerate heavy amounts of rain, calling for the government to cooperate with them urgently.

The municipality spokesman also called for allocating a direct air route from Tripoli and Benghazi to support the health sector and the electricity network in Kufra.

House collapse and traffic accidents

The Director of the Kufra Ambulance and Emergency Department, Ibrahim Balhassan, confirmed the collapse of a house inhabited by refugees from Sudan due to the rain and wind.

Al-Hassan added to Al-Ahrar that the collapse of the house caused injuries to 3 children who were transferred to Al-Hawari Rural Hospital due to their moderate injuries.

For his part, the spokesman for the Martyr Attia Al-Kassah Hospital in Kufra, Muhammad Bushlaif, told Al-Ahrar that a number of citizens were injured in traffic accidents due to the lack of visibility on the roads.

Government moves

For his part, the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, directed all ministries and relevant bodies to raise the level of maximum readiness and harness the necessary capabilities and equipment to move them to the Kufra municipality.

In a post on the X platform, Dabaiba called on all agencies to provide support to citizens in Kufra, as a result of the heavy rains that caused floods and damaged a number of public and private properties.

In turn, the Minister of Health, Ramadan Abu Janah, directed the Emergency Medicine and Support Center and the Ambulance and Emergency Department to immediately head to Kufra to respond to the health situation in the municipality after it was exposed to floods.

In his interview with Libya Al-Ahrar, the spokesman for the Meteorological Center, Mohi El-Din Ali, expected that heavy rains would continue to fall on the southeastern regions during Sunday and Monday, stressing that they would cause valleys to flow.

Yesterday, Sunday, the National Center of Meteorology warned of the increase of thunderclouds and rainfall in the southeastern regions, noting at the same time that it may cause some local valleys to flow, calling on all citizens to exercise caution and care.
