Ukraine is trying to further expand its control over the occupied territories. There is now a separate command for the region.

After Ukrainian troops advanced into the neighboring Russian region of Kursk, Kiev set up a military command for the area under its control. The command should take care of maintaining law and order and the priority needs of the population, said Commander-in-Chief Olexander Syrsky during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Major General Eduard Moskalev has been appointed head of the command.

Syrskyj further said that since the start of the offensive, the Ukrainian military has taken control of 82 towns and 1,150 square kilometers of territory. The information could not be independently verified.

Ukrainian forces have been conducting a major ground offensive in Russia’s Kursk region since August 6. It is the first such advance since the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine in February 2022.
