Since the beginning of last year, there has been a trend that there is a difference between electricity prices for households and legal users. The average weighted price of electricity calculated by the Public Service Regulatory Commission (SPRK) in the 4th quarter of last year in the household segment was 157 euros per megawatt hour (euro/MWh) (-9% compared to the 4th quarter of 2022) and in the segment of legal users – 126 euros/MWh (-32% vs. Q4 2022). Positive – in the 4th quarter, compared to the 3rd quarter of the same year, the difference decreased by six euros/MWh.

“Such a difference is related to the proportion of different types of contracts in the relevant user segments, as well as the time and terms of their conclusion. Accordingly, a large number of households that concluded contracts at a time when prices were high have fixed this price level for a longer period and the impact of the reduction in electricity prices on the exchange Therefore, it is useful for household users to consider whether it would be more beneficial to terminate the existing contract by concluding a new fixed or exchange price contract, in which the price of electricity would be lower,” explains Jānis Negribs, director of the Energy Department of PUK.

In March, the monthly average price of electricity in Latvia decreased to 68 euros/MWh, which is the lowest level since April last year. Thus, last month the price of electricity in Latvia was 9% lower than in February, but compared to March 2023 it decreased by 22%, according to High voltage network market review.
