Kuwaiti authorities announced on Wednesday that they had taken control of the oil spill off Ras Julaiah, after activating the national plan to confront and combat marine oil pollution and informing all concerned parties of the plan to address the spill.

The Deputy Director General for Technical Affairs at the Environment Public Authority, Abdullah Al-Zaidan, said, according to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), that based on the report received about the detection of an oil slick in the sea opposite the Ras Jalaiah area, about 6 kilometers from the coast, the authority activated the plan to take the necessary measures and prevent the leak from reaching vital facilities on the southern coasts and combat it.

He added that the National Petroleum Company secured the oil slick and combated it inside the sea, and took over dealing with any slicks before they reached the shores opposite the monitoring area.

Al-Zaidan pointed out that coordination has been made with the International Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment to use satellite images to determine the extent and scope of the oil spill, indicating that the source of the slick is still unknown, and the study of the area will be completed to confirm the possible sources.

Kuwait Oil Company confirmed that the observed spots are not the result of any operations carried out by the company in the area, as part of the marine exploration project.
