G-Dragon (Kwon Ji-yong), a member of the group ‘Big Bang’ and a solo singer, continues to use his stage name even after leaving YG Entertainment, which discovered him.

According to G-Dragon and the music industry on the 1st, G-Dragon received all trademark rights for G-Dragon, GD, etc. from YG. It has been reported that YG’s general producer Yang Hyun-suk transferred them on a large scale without any compensation.

When YG announced late last year that G-Dragon had signed a contract with Galaxy Corporation, they also released a statement saying, “We sincerely hope that he is blessed with a new start.”

G-Dragon is a stage name that is inseparable from Kwon Ji-yong. He was also called G-Dragon when he was a YG trainee right before his debut with Big Bang in 2006.

G-Dragon is currently in the final stages of working on his new album. This will be his first solo album in seven years since his second mini-album, “Kwon Ji Yong,” released in June 2017.

G-Dragon is the most destructive solo singer in Korea. He is the leading member of Big Bang, the second generation of K-pop idol groups. He opened the door for ‘composing idols’ who write their own songs. He is said to have changed the landscape of Korean idol groups that focused on performance.

Most idol groups that are currently active have a member who composes songs. However, when Big Bang debuted, G-Dragon’s presence was groundbreaking.

Equipped with producing skills, he is also an idol who represents ‘musical progress’. ‘Kwon Ji-yong’, which was released as a USB rather than a physical album, brought up the topic of music storage media throughout the domestic music industry, and sparked a debate on ‘whether a USB is a physical album or not’.

G-Dragon also highlighted the importance of ‘idol branding’. He is receiving love calls from world-class luxury brands due to his outstanding fashion sense. In the first half of this year, he was appointed as a visiting professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), which became a hot topic.

Meanwhile, this is not the first time that YG has shown a generous attitude toward the trademarks of the singers they own. When the members of the group ‘iKon’ discovered by YG ended their exclusive contracts and transferred to 143 Entertainment, they were also allowed to use their team name.

There are increasing cases like this in the music industry as well. Cube Entertainment agreed to allow the members of the group ‘BTOB’, who formed BTOB Company, to use the BTOB trademark. Cube also allowed the group ‘HIGHLIGHT’ to use the trademark of their old name ‘BEAST’. Woollim Entertainment also transferred the trademark to the members of the group ‘INFINITE’. All of the members of GOT7 left JYP Entertainment, which discovered them, but JYP transferred the trademark to them and they are continuing their activities.
