Vladimir Putin met his Mongolian counterpart Ukhnaa Khurelsukh on Tuesday during a welcoming ceremony organized in the center of Ulaanbaatar, according to pictures provided by Russian official media.

The Mongolian government did not comment on the possible arrest of the Russian leader. But, on social networks, the spokesperson for the President denied the press reports according to which the ICC sent a letter asking the local authorities to issue an arrest warrant during this visit.

Genghis Khan Square – also called Sukhbaatar – in the center of Ulaanbaatar, the Mongolian capital, was decorated on Monday with huge flags of Mongolia and Russia, in honor of the visit of the Russian president.

But in the afternoon, some demonstrators expressed their dismay, some holding a banner that read “Remove war criminal Putin.”

Another demonstration is planned for Tuesday afternoon at the Ulaanbaatar Monument for Victims of Political Terrorism, which pays tribute to those who suffered from the communist regime that existed for many decades in Mongolia.

kyiv reacted angrily to the “immunity” given by the Mongolian authorities to the Russian president. Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgii Tykhii accused Mongolia of “allowing an accused criminal to escape justice, thereby sharing responsibility for his war crimes.”

The Hague-based court recalled last week that its member states have an “obligation” to arrest individuals targeted by arrest warrants.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is in Mongolia for an official visit. This is his first in a member country of the International Criminal Court (ICC) since the arrest warrant was issued against him in March 2023.

When he arrived on Monday evening in the capital Ulaanbaatar, the leader was welcomed by the guard of honor at the airport, without arrest when he got off the plane, according to images published by Russian television.

The advances of the army, political declarations and government positions, follow the events of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
