Kyrgyzstan will not open a US military base on its territory

Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov said that one Russian base on its territory would be enough for his country. According to him, there are no plans to open a US base in Kyrgyzstan.

During a press conference, Mr. Japarov said that “I don’t want to play cat and mouse, having established two bases of two powers”. “We now have one base operating on our territory – the Russian military base in Kant. One is enough for us, “he noted (quoted by Interfax).

In December 2001, an American airbase named after Peter Gansi was located on the territory of the Kyrgyz Manas airport. In 2005 it was renamed the Manas airbase, in 2009 – the Manas Transit Center. In 2013, the Kyrgyz government decided to close it, the closing ceremony was held on June 3, 2014.

As Kommersant found out, during the June 16 summit in Geneva, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested that US President Joe Biden use Russian bases in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to control the situation in Afghanistan. Politico wrote that the United States is negotiating with countries bordering Afghanistan on the use of bases located on their territory.
