Tàpies, Fontcuberta, Lucio Fontana, Antonio López, Miquel Barceló, Chillida, Mona Hatoum, Ignasi Aballí, Soledad Sevilla, Sean Scully and Bill Viola, among many others, will be some of the tenants of the new space.

With the arrival of the ArtStudio CaixaForum Collection, our artists are brought closer to a unique heritage that reinforces a district that has not stopped growing and that includes new artistic and creative proposals day after day that consolidate it as a cultural reference for our country,” he said. highlighted the mayor of Hospitalet de Llobregat, Núria Marín, during the presentation of a project that involves the conversion of a warehouse in which part of the artistic collection was already stored.

With the renovation of the space, the entity seeks to bring together the entire collection in a single space that concentrates work, laboratories and conservation workshops and, at the same time, “give new life to the warehouse, conceived to be a future national reference center.” The rehabilitation will start in mid-2024 and will involve an investment of 12 million euros.

More space

Currently, the La Caixa Foundation’s contemporary art collection is divided between the Barcelona headquarters of CaixaForum and the warehouse to be renovated, spaces that have reached the limit of their storage capacity. Thus, with the reforms, space will not only be gained in Hospitalet, but square meters will also be freed up so that CaixaForum can increase its activity in the future.

Although it will not be an exhibition space, the new center does aspire to become a ‘think tank’ that encourages the meeting of professionals and the study and dissemination of works. To this end, the Pretel Arquitectura project includes spaces for the conservation, study, management and storage of works, as well as logistical, technical and maintenance units. maintenance of the new warehouse, as well as spaces that will house the facilities, machines and equipment necessary for the correct functioning of the building.

During its four decades of life and activity, the foundation’s collection, made up of painting, sculpture, photography, film, installations and video art, has presented almost two hundred exhibitions and in the last year alone has attracted 585,000 visitors. “The Contemporary Art Collection of the La Caixa Foundation is the first private collection in Spain with the desire to be international,” highlights an entity that since 2000 has attended to almost 750 requests for the loan of works.
