There is no room for everyone at La Bandera de La Concha. No matter how large the San Sebastián bay is, the first two Sundays in September is a space reserved for only eight crews and San Sebastián already has a guaranteed place. Seven, therefore, is the magic number that has been reverberating for days in the minds of the members of the 24 drifters that this Thursday (6:00 p.m.) will pass the casting in the most feared time trial regatta of the season.

The boats have been framed in two groups of twelve boats. In A there are the most powerful drifters, eleven from the Eusko Label Liga plus the champion of the Galician League. The list is made up of Urdaibai, Zierbena, Kaiku, Lekittarra, Ondarroa, Santurtzi, Hondarribia, Orio, Getaria, Cabo Cruz, Meira and Ares. In series B there are Arkote, Deusto, Busturialdea, San Pedro, Lapurdi, San Juan, Zumaia, Zarautz, Mutriku, Hibaika, Bueu and Tirán.

The starting order of the batches and the crews will be determined today at noon by draw. In the event that the boats with the least sporting potential should row first, two minutes will elapse between the departure of the last of the first round and the first of the second, while otherwise all will leave at one-minute intervals. In general, the qualifying does not usually bring big surprises, although there have been years like 2006 in which Hondarribia was left out and last season, without going any further, Urdaibai, who later took the flag, flirted with elimination -he was fifth and got in for only two seconds.

A priori, the vessels of the Eusko Label Liga should impose their law. The ‘txos’, Zierbena, Hondarribia and Orio are fixed in all pools except hecatomb, but from there the cabals begin. Getaria, who returned to La Concha last season after half a century, Cabo Cruz, Lekittarra, who had a great summer; Kaiku, who hasn’t been consistent at all but when he has managed to let go he has offered good performances; and Ondarroa, which has reached the final stretch of the season at a good time and has nothing to lose, are emerging as the main candidates to fight for the other three places at stake. And, as soon as one of these main players gets lost, surely boats like San Pedro, Lapurdi and Arkote -the first three of ARC 1- will be on the lookout.

The traineras will encounter waves of around a meter high and some north-northeast wind with gusts that could reach 18 kilometers per hour at times.
