Reluctantly, Emmanuel Macron succeeded in reconciling the New Popular Ecological and Social Union (Nupes). United, the four leaders of the left-wing parties, Olivier Faure (Socialist Party, PS), Manuel Bompard (La France insoumise, LFI), Fabien Roussel (French Communist Party, PCF) and Marine Tondelier (Europe Ecologie-Les Verts, EELV) will go to the meeting set by the Head of State at the Legion of Honor school in Saint-Denis, in the Paris region, on Wednesday August 30.

As of Thursday, they had agreed to take “joint action”, specifies the “rebellious” deputy of Val-d’Oise Paul Vannier. Difficult indeed to refuse this invitation addressed to all the parties. On paper, this back-to-school initiative represented an improvement for the left: no more reference to the “republican arc”, a formula used by the government to exclude, in fact, LFI in the same way as the National Rally (RN).

But the Elysée has marked its priorities, if we look at the haste with which certain invitations were launched, the slowness taken by others. While the head of state had personally called the leader of the Republicans (LR), Eric Ciotti, on Tuesday August 22, Jordan Bardella of the RN in stride, the four left-wing parties had to wait until last weekend to read the invitation letter. Manuel Bompard was contacted by the Elysée on Friday, right in Amfis.

He never managed to reach the palace in return. “The night before at 8 p.m., we still don’t have the agenda”, he lamented on Tuesday. Olivier Faure and Fabien Roussel were still waiting for a phone call from Emmanuel Macron. This management in dribs and drabs from the Elysée has fed a feeling of mistrust within the Nupes. The left parties fear that this meeting is only a pretext to top with LR, as feared by Olivier Faure, who does not want to “hold the candle to a dialogue between Ciotti and Macron”.

Common social and climate concerns

On the form, the party leaders have agreed to avoid any informal moment, such as a dinner with the Head of State, as was initially planned. “It’s still not difficult to agree on the fact that we are not going to stay to eatmeasures Fabien Roussel, I’m not going to find myself at the table between Macron, Ciotti and Le Pen to talk about my vacation! The French can’t understand that. »

Finally, the parties learned that it would not be a feast with great fanfare, but an extension of the working sessions of the day. Be that as it may, none of the left-wing leaders intends to shun the appointment set by the tenant of the Elysée. Including La France insoumise, which had complained of being excluded from this “republican arc” by Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne. Especially since Olivier Faure had insisted that the movement of Jean-Luc Mélenchon also be invited. “We asked ourselves all the questions, but very quickly it seemed useful to us to go to the meeting to say the emergencies, to witness this monarchical summons”explains Paul Vannier.
