The new parking plan of La Rochelle comes into force this Tuesday, January 2. Objective according to the municipality: “limit the place of the car while developing the accessibility of the city and its attractiveness for a more peaceful city, where it is good to live and breathe”. Presented last June, this vision aroused strong reactions and forced La Rochelle elected officials to review their copy at the end of December, after “50 consultations and public meetings”.

The new developments are mainly divided into three zones. The first, called “orange”, applies to the hypercenter of La Rochelle. This is a short-term parking zone, limited to 2 hours (for 5 euros). More than twenty streets are affected – compared to around forty initially. In total, 700 places switch to orange – compared to 900 originally planned. A “green” zone is dedicated to parking near the city center and has 3,500 spaces. This will be limited to 4 hours at a price of 8 euros. Finally, “blue” zones will remain free on the condition of using a disc and parking there for less than 3 hours. In all of these three areas, free admission will continue to apply between noon and 2 p.m., from 6:30 p.m. to 9 a.m. the next day, as well as on Sundays and public holidays.

Rochelais living in the city center will be able to benefit from decreasing annual subscriptions according to their family quotient – the weight and motorization of their vehicles could also be taken into account. According to the municipality, 65% of La Rochelle residents live less than 7 km from the city center, in the heart of the city center or in its inner ring. This sector would also concentrate 90% of jobs in the maritime city.
