(ANSA) – ROME, AUGUST 24 – The presidents of the Senate and the Chamber, Ignazio La Russa and Lorenzo Fontana, express their grief and closeness to the families of the victims of the earthquake that devastated central Italy in 2016. “At 3:36 a.m. on August 24, 2016, a violent earthquake shook central Italy, striking and devastating Amatrice and numerous other villages. Eight years later, the pain is still strong for the 299 victims, for their families and for those who, on that tragic night, lost their homes, their jobs, and a loved one. Our thoughts go out to all of them,” wrote Senate President Ignazio La Russa on Facebook. “Eight years ago, the country was hit by a devastating sequence of earthquakes in central Italy, which continued in the following months. My thoughts today go to the victims, their families, those who are still suffering the consequences of the earthquake, all the communities involved and those who continue to work alongside those territories. In these eight years we have witnessed the start of a complex reconstruction process, not only of infrastructure, but also of the social and economic fabric of the territories involved. A particular sign of hope, in which I am honored to have participated, was the recent inauguration, in Norcia, of the new Abbey of San Benedetto in Monte. From here an important message arrived, which leads us not to forget the suffering experienced and to continue to pay vigilant attention to the restart”, declared the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Lorenzo Fontana.
