The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said on Friday that California-based company Upside Foods will be allowed to sell lab-grown meat after all required safety and quality tests. With the help of cells taken from chickens, meat is produced in the laboratory. They are created in a laboratory without killing chickens. Until now, the sale and consumption of lab-grown meat has only been allowed in Singapore.
“The world is experiencing a food revolution, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is committed to promoting innovation in food supply,” FDA Commissioner Robert Califf told reporters. For that he is currently consulting with several companies. America will soon become a major market for lab-grown meat. A product that is considered environmentally friendly is lab-grown meat. Upside Foods, formerly known as Memphis Meats, welcomed the FDA’s decision. But it said it would take a few more months to start offering the product to supermarkets after approval. Upside Foods will also need approval from the US Department of Agriculture, according to a press report from The Guardian.
The announcement comes days after the COP 27 summit in Egypt discussed green food production. FDA approval of lab-grown meat products is considered a step in the right direction. Because more companies are expected to join this industry in future.
