25 Expatriates Arrested for Labor Law Violations in Muscat

In a recent crackdown by the Ministry of Labor in Muscat, Oman, 25 expatriates were arrested for violating the labor law. The General Directorate of Labor Welfare of the Ministry of Labor conducted an inspection campaign in the provinces of Qurayyat and Amerat in Muscat Governorate, leading to the arrest of the workers for violating the provisions of the Labor Act. Legal action is being taken against them, according to a press release from the Ministry of Labor.

This news comes on the heels of the recent arrest of two expatriates by the Royal Oman Police for smuggling drugs into the country. The two individuals were apprehended for smuggling 84 kilograms of hashish and 19 kilograms of crystal meth by the North Bathina Governorate Police Command, and legal proceedings against them have been completed, as per a statement from the Royal Oman Police.

In other news, Oman has granted citizenship to 201 expatriates, as per an order issued by the ruler of Oman, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq. While authorities have not released more information about the new citizens, it is known that the application fee for citizenship is 600 riyals. Wives or ex-wives of natives are required to pay 300 riyals, and children must also pay 300 riyals for Omani citizenship. The applicants must submit documents proving that they are working in Oman and have not faced any previous legal action. Additionally, a total of 12 documents, including a medical report, are required for the application process. Children of foreigners who are granted Omani citizenship will also be granted citizenship within six months.

Foreign applicants are also subject to an Arabic language written test, and if they fail, they can retake it after six months for a total of up to four attempts. Those receiving citizenship cannot stay outside the country for more than six months continuously without special permission from the Ministry.

The latest developments in Muscat highlight the continued efforts of the Omani government to ensure compliance with labor laws and regulations, as well as the evolving policies regarding citizenship for expatriates in the country.
