The conclusions of the study for the future law of uses of time promoted by the Ministry of Labor include among their proposals the reduction of the working day to 37.5 hours in 2026 and to 32 hours in 2032, as well as measures regarding flexibility, conciliation, productivity and occupational health.

“The time has come to address the law on the use of time”, affirmed the second vice president and Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, this Friday at the presentation of the study, and has opted for a regulation of working time that allows having “time to live, to think, to get bored and do what we like”.

work and productivity

Díaz has established a direct relationship between working times and the “very poor” productivity in Spain.

“We have less productivity because it has been shown that there are factors such as extending the working day and the happy face-to-face that not only they do not improve productivity, but worsen it“, has pointed out the also head of Social Economy.

The vice president has once again recalled that the 40-hour day has been in force for more than a century in Spain and has defended that enjoying “healthy, sustainable and flexible” days will make the economy more productive.

Díaz has paid particular attention to the flexibility of the working day by ensuring that if workers can decide on their working time so that their position “accommodates your needs and not the other way around, everything is going better”.

“Compaction” of the days

The director of the Vice President’s Legal Coordination, Professor María Amparo Ballester, has affirmed that the study “It points to a reduction in the maximum working day”which “has to be real and feasible” and allow flexibility “so that the work is adapted to the working people”.

One of the authors of the report, ESADE Professor of Labor Law, Ana Gines, He is the one who has outlined some of the conclusions of the report, such as the aforementioned reduction in working hours, which must be “gradual”, take into account the specificities of the sectors and have incentives.

Another of the measures they propose is that companies are obliged to inform workers of all aspects of work and their day, also for those people with “unpredictable days”so they know when the company can require their work and when they can refuse it.

Likewise, the study advocates the “compaction” of the daysshorten the time at which work ends, reduce interruptions in the split shift or reform night work so as not to be able to work more than five consecutive nights.

The second vice president and also a candidate for the elections on July 23 for Sumar has defended that the law of use of time is a task to be addressed “immediately”and has trusted that in the next government they will have the opportunity to do so.
