The Spanish Society of General and Family Physicians (SEMG) has warned that lack of sleep in adolescents it’s a public health problem and social”, adding that it is generating “a debt” with the dream that “he is leaving a deep mark” also in his social relationships.

Currently, this population group sleep less than the recommended 8-10 hourswhich has “serious consequences” for their health, directly impacting their daytime functionality both in the emotional plane (increased irritability and tolerance, suicidal ideation), such as social (difficulties in relating to one another, behavioral disorders, aggressiveness, maladjusted behaviors, substance use) as well as their cognitive performance (attention and memory problems, fatigue difficulties, deficient performance, school failure) and their health (anxiety, depression, diabetes, or an increased risk of obesity).

For this reason, the SEMG and the Alianza por el Sueño, with the collaboration of the Granada City Council, have organized a health education activity aimed at students between the ages of 12 and 15 of the Colegio Sagrado Corazón de Granada on the importance of taking care of their sleep habits.

“The dream is necessary to live and have a good state of health. It is a vital function to replenish the energy we have consumed throughout the day, cleanse our body and get the energy to be able to do all the things we have to do the next day and feel good”, explained Dr. Odile Romero, coordinator of the Alliance for Sleep, Clinical Head of Neurophysiology and Coordinator of the Sleep Unit at Hospital Vall d’Hebron and Hospital Quirónsalud in Barcelona.

According to Dr. Lorenzo Armenteros del Olmo, a member of the Sleep Alliance and SEMG spokesperson, “it is necessary to educate the population, especially at an early age, about the importance of sleep in health, in social relations and in energy”.

In fact, the lack of sleep directly affects the energy that is necessary to be able to play sports, to be able to study and memorize, and all this also affects the eating pattern.

Use of screens

The SEMG has recalled that the device onboarding and exposure to blue lights in adolescents’ daily lives has impacted their circadian patterns.

“The increasing use of screens and blue light tricks the brain and that this think it’s still dayTherefore, it inhibits the production of melatonin, which makes it difficult for sleep to begin and causes problems when it comes to falling asleep,” explained Dr. Romero.

For this reason, he has insisted on the importance of not using mobile devices in the hours before bedtime because they produce brain hyperactivation that negatively affects the quantity and quality of sleep.
