The head of the Axel Springer Group called the fatherland a “new GDR authoritarian state” – in a text message to someone he thought was a friend. The private message from his cell phone reached the New York Times in the fall. Since then, Döpfner has been accused of not taking part in lateral thinker demos simply because a two-meter man would attract too much attention there. After all, he does not become even more radical under pressure, and does not really take to the streets now, but in sackcloth and ashes.
