Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn in Joker 2 disappoints a bit

by time news

Quanti Joker have we had in the last 15 years? Many, maybe too many. There was Jared Leto’s much underappreciated Joker in Suicide Squadthe hidden and full of potential of Robert Pattinson’s Batman, which has not yet found its full expression, that of Christopher Nolan, perhaps the most successful, played by Heath Ledgerand of course that of Todd Phillips, the least Joker of all, who has just come out with his second episode, Joker: Folie à Deux. Not all of them corresponded to one Harley Quinnalthough we have also seen different faces of his character over the years. Our favorite is perhaps the one by Margot Robbie in Birds of Prey. The one that disappointed us? There Lee of Lady Gaga alongside Joaquin Phoenix.

A Joker who isn’t Joker and a Harley Quinn who is too Harley Quinn

Why did he disappoint us? Because we are faced with a superficial character, one manic pixie girl which does not seem to deserve – at least in the opinion of the director and screenwriter – in-depth analysis or nuance. A disturbed person who with his sick love drags our protagonist – who was doing badly but not terribly and who seemed willing to follow the path traced for him by a reasonable lawyer with good intentions – into the abyss, confused between reality and fiction, man and character, homicidal drive and desire for fame in any form. Unfortunately, for his character, this is nothing new. Harley Quinn it has often been written, drawn, scripted purely as a function of the Jokeroften submissive or useful only to her character development, which has always been fascinating and polarizing, never independent. This film, presented in Venice, eagerly awaited and talked about from the very first moment, is no exception.

One problem among many (and poor Lady Gaga)

Not that the rest is much more in-depth, On the contrary. The sensation is that it gives a conceptual flash potentially interesting (an investigation into the effect of public opinion’s obsession with brutal news cases, the effect of media speculation on the trials and the people involved) that a film that is always the same and fills in the gaps has been squeezed like a lemon. with the songs, with perfectly executed digital photography, with an overall skilful direction. In this vortex of emptiness and dilution even the protagonists are lost, the impressive range of Joaquin Phoenix and the overall valid interpretation of Lady Gaga. But with a character of an alarming and outdated superficiality and with a very weak script, as ours could Stefani Germanotta do more?
