Nothing surprising for Lady Gaga, who sang, in French, “La vie en rose,” a standard by Edith Piaf in the movie “A star is born” in 2018.

Zizi Jeanmaire, who passed away in 2020 and whose centenary of birth we are celebrating, remains one of the voices of a cheeky and saucy Paris.

With her boyish haircut, Zizi Jeanmaire was the most atypical of French ballerinas, showcasing her feathers and sequins on stages around the world, breaking traditional boundaries of dance, song, and music-hall.

As a “little rat” at the Opera, she slammed the door on a whim at 19. The meeting with choreographer Roland Petit, who would become the love of her life, changed her destiny.

Within the company of her significant other, the Ballets de Paris, she shone in “Carmen” in 1949, with choreography that was astonishingly modern and daring, touring the stages of Paris, London, and Broadway (seven months on the bill).

In 1961, at the Alhambra, a Parisian music-hall, she triumphed with the song “Mon truc en plumes.”

“It’s a superb music-hall number that I have presented around the world and is probably one of the most beautiful of its kind,” she noted.

Summer 2024 is busy for Lady Gaga. In mid-July, Stefani Germanotta, as her civil name, 38, announced on her social media that she is preparing a new album.

The interpreter of “Poker Face,” a hit from 2008, is also highly anticipated on the big screen this fall in “Joker: Folie à deux,” with Joaquin Phoenix, which will be presented in advance at the Venice Film Festival.

Emerging Trends in Performance Art and Music: A Spotlight on Lady Gaga and Zizi Jeanmaire

As Lady Gaga mesmerizes audiences worldwide with her rendition of “Mon truc en plumes” at the recent Olympic opening ceremony, it brings to light a growing trend that intertwines the legacies of iconic artists. This performance not only honors Zizi Jeanmaire, a pioneer of French music-hall, but also signals a revival of classic performances infused with contemporary artistry.

With renewed interest in historic performances, artists are increasingly drawing inspiration from cultural icons. Lady Gaga, known for her avant-garde style, adeptly showcases the timelessness of Jeanmaire’s work while reintroducing it to a new generation. This trend indicates a potential shift where artists might frequently revisit and reinterpret historical songs and performances, creating a bridge between eras.

In parallel, the integration of social media has transformed how artists engage with their audiences. As seen with Gaga’s announcement of her upcoming album and film projects, platforms like Instagram and Twitter have become essential for talent in the entertainment industry. Fans now crave a more intimate connection with artists, driving the popularity of behind-the-scenes content and real-time updates, thereby reshaping promotional strategies.

Furthermore, the fusion of music and visual arts is becoming more pronounced. Lady Gaga’s upcoming role in “Joker: Folie à deux” exemplifies this synergy, merging cinematic storytelling with musical performance. This trend reflects a broader movement in the entertainment industry, where multidisciplinary collaborations are expected to flourish, leading to a richer, immersive experience for audiences.

As we look ahead to the next generation of entertainers, the legacy of artists like Jeanmaire will likely continue to influence their work. There exists a ripe opportunity for innovation by blending the classics with modern interpretations, promising exciting developments in music, performance art, and cross-genre collaborations.
