BOLZANO. After three years in which it was not possible, we are back to skating on Lake Caldaro. For many it seemed like a dream: social media was flooded with videos of the lake completely frozen and able to support the weight of people. A mirage that did not last long: already starting from the Epiphany, therefore a few days after the lake had been declared safe, it rained, the temperatures rose, and the ice began to weaken again.
There is therefore no skating anymore, except on high altitude lakes. These are capricious winters: sudden changes in temperature, heat, and those who love crossing the lakes increasingly do so at their own risk. «Every year the duration of the ice is reduced – explains the provincial meteorologist Dieter Peterlin – A few years ago it was possible to skate in Monticolo and Caldaro every winter, but now these are increasingly rare occasions».
The safest and most evocative frozen lakes are found at higher altitudes: the small lake of Fiè allo Sciliar, always full of skaters and Costalovara, the most loved by skaters. In the rest of the province, the spectacle of the frozen Braies lake is wonderful, as is Anterselva. «It is essential to inform yourself with the local authorities before climbing onto a frozen lake – the recommendation of Klaus Unterweger, director of Civil Protection – If in doubt, avoid instead».
