Lakshya Sen Finds Redemption and Renewed Joy in Australian open Title After Olympic Heartbreak

A hard-fought victory at the Australian open Super 500 in November 2025 marks more than just another title for Lakshya Sen; it represents a crucial turning point after a challenging year defined by Olympic disappointment and a struggle to rediscover his passion for the sport. While not the moast prestigious of wins, this triumph is a tangible reward for the 24-year-old’s dedication to both physical and mental recovery following the agonising near-miss at the Paris Olympics.

From Olympic Spotlight to Post-Games Struggles

Sen burst onto the national stage during the 2024 Paris Olympics, captivating Indian sports fans wiht his sensational performance despite ultimately finishing in fourth place.Having already accumulated a collection of BWF titles and medals, it was his Olympic showing that truly cemented his place in the public consciousness. However, the two heartbreaking losses in Paris where compounded by critical feedback from his childhood mentor, Prakash Padukone, who urged him to work harder and take greater obligation.

this proved to be a arduous period for Sen,extending well beyond the conclusion of the Olympic Games and the 2024 season. A subsequent string of disappointing results fueled questions, even from within his own mind. He had previously overcome a confidence crisis earlier in 2024 to even qualify for the Games, but the Olympic near-miss threatened to trigger another mental block, exacerbated by early tournament exits. “Post-Paris, there was a time where I was not doing so well, and there were many first round exits as well,” Sen revealed to reporters after his Australian Open win. “There are a lot of the things I was dealing with mentally and I had to let all those thoughts go and just enjoy badminton again.”

Reclaiming the Joy of the Game

The pressure and disappointment took a toll, diminishing sen’s love for a sport he had dedicated his life to as the age of 10. “To not enjoy the sport you’ve made the focus of your entire life can be as lethal as a body blow for any athlete,” highlighting the severity of his struggle. he admitted to feeling lost even after returning to training, still haunted by the proximity of an Olympic medal. “It was a bit hard for me to find motivation again to train hard and play a few tournaments,” he confessed. “I also took a break for some time after last year and the results were also not great.

He further enhanced his physical conditioning. The mental aspect, however, was the final piece of the puzzle. “I took a step back from that and started enjoying the training, the process again. I could feel a lot better on court and once I was like fully fit, especially before the World Championships, I got a few good training blocks and was happy to compete and try to win tournaments again.” He succinctly summarized his new approach: “not hurrying to win another tournament… but to enjoy the process, be out there to play and enjoy the sport and do the processes right.”

Sen’s post-win celebration – a gesture of blocking out external noise with his fingers in his ears – visually encapsulated his newfound focus. He acknowledged the doubts and differing opinions he faced during his struggles, but emphasized the importance of self-belief. “There were a lot of things throughout the year… there were a lot of doubts that were there in my mind. A lot of people had different opinions… I respect those as well, but for me it was vital to just lock everything and believe in myself.” He added,”I had to tell myself that,’it’s going to be,okay, just trust yourself that you are doing the right thing. And even though the results are not coming, but you are in the right track, eventually it will happen.'”

The culmination of this renewed approach was evident in his dominant performance at the Australian open, defeating opponents he had previously struggled against. With this newfound confidence and a refined skillset, Sen appears poised for even greater success. His talent has never been in question, and now his temperament is rapidly catching up. If all goes according to plan, 2026, with the Asian Games on the horizon, could very well be Lakshya Sen’s breakthrough year.
