Lamborghini Unveils First-Ever EV, the Lanzador, at Monterey Car Week

by time news

Italian luxury car manufacturer Lamborghini shocked attendees at Monterey Car Week by unveiling its first-ever electric vehicle (EV) years ahead of schedule. The Lamborghini Lanzador concept, part of the company’s electrification strategy called “Direction Cor Tauri,” is a high ground-clearance GT with a 2+2 seating format and two doors. While the Lanzador resembles the Urus SUV in size, it has a more coupe or sedan-like presence. The Lanzador was originally planned for a 2028 release, making its early debut a surprise for many.

Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann explained that the company aimed to fill a gap in their lineup with the introduction of the Lanzador. With two super sports cars and a super sports SUV already in their portfolio, a GT car was missing, and it perfectly aligns with Lamborghini’s DNA. According to Winklemann, the combination of high ground clearance and a sporty two-door appearance represents the best of both worlds in terms of design.

In terms of performance, the Lanzador boasts an electric motor on each axle, providing all-electric drive and peak power of over one megawatt, equivalent to over 1,000 horsepower. The all-wheel drive system includes active e-torque vectoring on the rear axle, enhancing dynamic cornering behavior.

Design-wise, the Lanzador stands out from other Lamborghinis. Its exterior takes inspiration from “spaceships,” featuring a cabin with a heavy forward-look and sharp lines reminiscent of an alien python from another dimension, according to Lamborghini’s head of design, Mitja Borkert.

Inside, the Lanzador showcases a cockpit design reminiscent of a jet fighter, incorporating diverse textures and sustainable materials such as sustainably sourced leather, 100% merino wool, regenerated carbon, and recycled plastic.

While Lamborghini did not provide pricing or exact availability details for the production model, given that the Lanzador is still a concept, the company plans to release the production version in 2028.
