Lamego Soldier Death: Rio Balsemão Training Incident

An Army soldier died during a training exercise this week, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The victim has been identified as João Rafael Paulino dos Santos Cardoso, a soldier from Mafra.

The alert regarding Cardoso’s disappearance was received at 11:39 pm on Monday, according to a source from the Tâmega e Sousa sub-regional command. A search involving 31 personnel and eleven vehicles was launched, and his body was discovered at 8:50 am on Tuesday on the Balsemão river, in the Penude region of Lamego municipality, Viseu district.

The Army has confirmed the opening of an investigation, conducted in conjunction with relevant authorities, and has informed the Military Judicial Police (PJM) to determine the full sequence of events.

The Army expressed deep regret over the loss and extended “heartfelt condolences to the family and friends” of Cardoso. Support mechanisms, including psychological assistance, have been activated for the soldier’s family.
