Mumbai to Boost Tennis Infrastructure with Land Allocation and ₹10 Crore Investment
A significant investment in Mumbai’s sporting future was approved today, with the Maharashtra government allocating approximately 2 acres of land to the Maha Tennis Foundation for the development of tennis infrastructure. The decision, presided over by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, aims to bolster the sport’s presence in Mumbai city and its surrounding suburbs.
The allocation, sourced from land owned by the Mumbai Housing and Area Development Board (MHADA) in Mauje Kole Kalyan (Andheri), Mumbai, marks a key step in a joint development project between the two entities. This initiative responds to a request from the Maha Tennis Foundation to reserve land previously designated as MHADA’s Recreational Ground.
Expanding Tennis Access Through Joint Development
The project envisions a collaborative effort to create state-of-the-art tennis facilities. According to sources, the land transfer will facilitate the implementation of a comprehensive development plan undertaken by the Maha Tennis Foundation on a partnership basis with MHADA. This strategic alliance is expected to yield substantial benefits for the local tennis community.
“This land allocation is a crucial step towards fostering the growth of tennis in Mumbai,” a senior official stated. “The joint development model ensures efficient resource utilization and a focused approach to building world-class infrastructure.”
₹10 Crore Share Capital to Fuel Non-Profit Initiative
Recognizing the non-profit nature of the Maha Tennis Foundation, the government has also approved a ₹10 crore (approximately $120,000 USD) share capital contribution through MHADA. This financial backing is intended to support the project’s implementation and ensure its long-term sustainability.
The investment underscores the government’s commitment to promoting sports development, particularly in a city increasingly recognized for its vibrant athletic scene. This move builds on recent initiatives, such as the opening of India’s largest rooftop racket destination in Mumbai.
The allocation of land and financial support are expected to significantly enhance tennis accessibility and cultivate talent within Mumbai and its suburbs, solidifying the city’s position as a prominent hub for the sport.
