(Motorsport-Total.com) – Lando Norris and the McLaren team are the favorites to qualify for the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix, which will take place on Saturday from 17:00 in Hungary. In the third free practice session (FT3), Norris got the best time in much cooler conditions than on Friday (37 instead of 60 degree asphalt temperature).

Lando Norris set the fastest time in the third free practice session at Hungary

Norris was stopped in 1:16.098 minutes and with this time he dropped his colleague Oscar Piastri to second place by 0.044 seconds. In the third sector, Piastri was even slightly faster than Norris. That is to say for McLaren, because the lead over the first follower, Max Verstappen on Red Bull, was 0.281 seconds in the end.

Verstappen wasn’t entirely satisfied with the balance of his Red Bull in the first FT3 run, but he was more than that from the second (“It’s a bit better now”). Which suggests that Red Bull wasn’t at its best from the start, but could have got it right in time for qualifying.

“There are two corners where the Max didn’t drive optimally,” says Helmut Marko in an interview ORF. “But the bottom line is: McLaren is very, very fast. What gives us hope, perhaps, is that we only used one new set of tyres. If you put the second one on, that’s about two-tenths .”

“So it will be very close in quality. The positive thing is: our long runs with the hard tires were very good. I think it will only be between McLaren and us in quality. And then in the race, although it in its very narrow course, with the use of tires, it is also possible to overtake maneuvers.

Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) started his fast qualifying simulation late – and spun in the middle sector. He finished tenth, 0.688 seconds behind. Hamilton’s spin not only ruined his own lap, but also Fernando Alonso’s (14th/Aston Martin/0.903) due to the yellow flags.

George Russell (Mercedes) came fourth, but with a respectable gap of 0.466 seconds. Behind him were Carlos Sainz (Ferrari/+0.541), Daniel Ricciardo (Racing Bulls/+0.554), Alexander Albon (Williams/+0.563) and Nico Hülkenberg (Haas).

Hülkenberg (Haas) kept the best overall time in the first sector until the end. With a lap time of 1:16.696 minutes, he eventually finished eighth. Behind Norris: 0.598 seconds. He was 0.811 seconds ahead of his teammate Kevin Magnussen (19th).
