Landslide buries family in Xalapa; three dead

A family was left buried in Xalapa, Veracruzafter the landslide of a hill on his home; the balance was left to three people dead.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Poniente 2 street in the 9 de Abril neighborhood, near the Veracruz de Xalapa neighborhood early Friday morning.

In response, neighbors were the ones who notified the authorities. Civil Protection (PC) elements of the state arrived at the scene and began search and rescue efforts.

According to information provided by the institution, four people were able to escape on their own, but three more people died: a man, a woman and her baby.

At the scene, elements of the Sedena, the National Guard, the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP), the State and Municipal PC, Firefighters, the Red Cross, Cruz Ámbar, among other organizations and volunteers, were coordinated.

It was also reported that after rescuing all the people trapped by the collapse, the authorities evacuated the surrounding homes to avoid another tragedy.

Residents say that the landslide was not only caused by the heavy rains that hit the region, but was also due to a water leak that had been going on for two days, which had been reported to CMAS (Municipal Commission for Drinking Water and Sanitation of Xalapa).

According to Ricardo Ahued Bardahuil, mayor of Xalapa, in a conference he held after the events, he indicated that there was indeed a record of a request for attention regarding a water leak from a 3-inch pipe, however, after giving it attention, there was nothing that could be done because the hill was already washing away.

“A request for assistance was received, as happens in the city for a water leak, in an upper part of the colony where this family unfortunately suffered these misfortunes.” It is a three-inch pipe on Calle Sur 4, lt. 7, mz. 10, in the 9 de Abril colony. There is a request folio with the number 944574 and another with folio 94754579, which was given at 11:17 after the request for attention. However, after being attended to by personnel from Ing. Salzillo, various actions such as escape, upon approaching the area, unfortunately there was nothing to do since the hill was already washing away,” he indicated.
