by time news

On the morning of Wednesday, August 7, serious landslides hit the municipality of Teorama, Norte de Santander. The constant rains that have hit the region caused a mass of land to slide, destroying the homes of many inhabitants of the area.

According to official reports, more than 120 families were affected. The secretary of Risk Management Unit of the department, William Vera, stated: “We have more than one hundred and twenty families affected by heavy rains that left them affected.” Vera also indicated that they are working closely with the mayor of the municipality, Uber Said Conde, to provide the necessary assistance and offer a rapid response to the affected people.

“We have been planning a series of dredging operations in risk areas in some municipalities. In this case, in Teorama, the actions are planned in the La Cecilia sector because we have detected a series of problems there that warrant this work,” added Vera in a radio interview.

At the moment, there are no official figures confirmed for injuries or deaths due to the landslides. However, the Risk Unit is working on preventive measures due to the recent constant rains, and they are on alert to respond to any other similar emergency in the municipality.

It is worth noting that in July, the National Government announced a plan to prepare for emergencies related to the La Niña phenomenon. According to the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam), this phenomenon could affect the country during the season from August to September and could extend until early 2025.
