Addressing the concerns surrounding identification and support for these children, we spoke with Dr. Wael Abdel Khaleq Al-Dakrouri, Head of the Communication Disorders Department at the Psychiatric Care Clinics Complex in Riyadh. Dr. Wael explained that while children learn language at different rates, it is essential to recognize the signs that indicate possible language disorders in pre-school children. Contrary to popular myths, Dr. Wael emphasized that bilingualism does not cause language problems and is, in fact, beneficial for children’s cognitive and perceptual development. Studies have shown that bilingual children exhibit enhanced self-control skills, attention, and cognitive flexibility. Learning more than one language does not cause delays in language development and can be beneficial, even for children with language and speech delays.

When it comes to treatment, Dr. Wael underscored the crucial role of certified speech-language pathologists in fostering children’s language skills in understanding, expression, and use. Intervention programs provided by these professionals assist children in preparing for reading and writing. It is vital for speech-language pathologists to collaborate with families, involving them in the treatment program and offering guidance on interactions and activities they can do at home to support their child.
