The 9th Foreign Ministers’ Meeting of Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Held in Chiang Mai, Thailand
At the 9th Foreign Ministers’ Meeting of the Lancang-Mekong River Cooperation held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the construction of a “Lancang-Mekong River community of shared destiny” through cooperation in the Belt and Road Initiative.
According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 16th, at the 9th Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on Lancang-Mekong River Cooperation, which included China and six Mekong River basin countries—Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam—Deputy Minister Wang Yi said, “The six countries in the Lancang-Mekong River basin are natural cooperative partners who share the same river water and are fatefully connected, as well as eternally friendly neighbors.”
“The international situation is becoming increasingly chaotic, unilateral protectionism is on the rise, and the risks and challenges facing each country are increasing,” said Vice Minister Wang. “In order to cope with the changes, it is crucial to establish a sense of a community with a shared future and uphold the principle of advancing together on the right path.”
He continued, “I hope to take the lead with the Mekong countries in building high-quality Belt and Road demonstration zones, global development initiative pilot zones, global security initiative experimental zones, and global civilization initiative model zones, so that the Lanmei national community of shared future can take root and achieve tangible results.”
At the same time, he proposed rejecting Western decoupling and strengthening joint crackdowns on transnational crimes, eliminating the smart gap, accelerating the construction of mutual networks including the southern expansion of the China-Laos railway, and promoting human and cultural exchanges.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry reported that the meeting participants agreed to strengthen cooperation in economic and trade investment, scientific and technological innovation, food security, energy, and water resources, and jointly combat transnational crime. They also released three statements on deepening cooperation on water resources, air purification, and combating border crime.
Vice Minister Wang, who began his visit to Myanmar and Thailand on the 14th, is scheduled to return home on the 17th after completing this meeting.
