Prime Minister Yair Lapid today (Sunday) attacked opposition leader Binyamin Netanyahu, following his testimony last week at the state commission of inquiry into the Miron disaster. In his words at the cabinet meeting, Lapid claimed that Netanyahu is responsible for the disaster that claimed the lives of 45 people – contrary to Netanyahu’s claim, who said in his testimony that he “cannot accept responsibility for what I did not know”.

Lapid’s words were said during a government discussion on crime in Arab society, after Communications Minister Yoaz Handel said that “the former prime minister sat on the investigative committee on Miron and said ‘I didn’t know and I’m not responsible’. In this case we know and we are responsible.” Lapid replied that “he knew – and he is responsible”.

As you may recall, last Thursday Netanyahu testified before the state commission of inquiry into the Miron disaster, to give his version of the events leading up to the 2021 LJ Baumer celebration. Netanyahu claimed in his testimony that he intervened in the decision-making in Miron only on the epidemiological issue. “The only reason I intervened was only because The corona,” said Netanyahu. “I did not deal with the safety hazard, only the procedural issue. There are thousands of dangers in the country, those who handle it are professionals.”

Netanyahu also claimed that he did not know about a safety problem at the site: “I did not know that there was a critical safety problem. The question is what happened that year that did not happen in the previous years.” According to him, “We are experts in hindsight. If I could go back today, I would have driven differently.”
