But, even if Meretz were to pass the blocking percentage and bring four mandates to join those of Labor, today there would be only eight mandates for both parties – while all the polls showed that if they ran together they would receive between 10-12 mandates. That is, if Michaeli had not refused the union with Meretz, the power of the parties would have been preserved, unlike in the previous union.

In the background, the winning side is already thinking about putting together a coalition. The two closest people to Likud Chairman Benjamin Netanyahu in the upcoming coalition are expected to be Levin’s opponent, Likud’s No. 2 and Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri. Levin will be the head of the party’s negotiating team, as was the case in the past, even if he is given the right of first refusal for one of the two positions : Minister of Foreign Affairs or Minister of Justice In the transition government, after the dismissal of Ayelet Shaked, Levin refused the position of Minister of Justice because he claimed that it would not be possible to do “what I believe in”.

If Levin gives up the justice case, Netanyahu’s candidate for the position may be former minister Amir Ohana, who is already familiar with the office. Israel Katz, the former Minister of Finance, is expected to demand to return to his former office or the foreign portfolio.
