They must be a recent graduate, who have at least a minimum legal experience, an advanced level of English and good writing of texts

Large law firms seek to have an inclusion of all generations in their portfolio of lawyers. This is why there is a figure called a junior lawyer.

“With them they seek a generational renewal and the contribution of new knowledge that allows the creation of new legal dynamics and other areas to the firm, additional to the need to acquire experience and focus in a certain area”, assured Rodrigo Riveros Victoria, general director and founding partner of Riveros Victoria Abogados.

The minimum requirements for this position are that you be a recent graduate, have at least minimal legal experience, an advanced level of English, good writing, and a valid or current professional card.

Upon being graduated, in general, firms do not request work experience with a specific contract. “That they have academic or pre-professional experiences during their student stage (participation in moots, seedbeds, monitoring, internships, etc.)”they score from Cuatrecasas.

Their income is lower than associates, partners, and senior lawyers. Jimmy Jiménez, founder of Integrity Legal, said that the average salary for a junior lawyer ranges from $2 million to $5 million, depending on the firm. “The profile of junior lawyers must be comprehensive, they must not only have legal knowledge, but also be interdisciplinary, with soft and hard skills, and a great desire to learn and contribute to the firm”added Riveros.

In Cuatrecasas they also value lawyers with double degrees in economics or similar.

At a motivational level, it is also very important to them that they show a clear vocation for law, with curiosity to learn and commitment.

At an aptitude level, they seek the ability to work in a team, human quality, orientation towards excellence and quality. Likewise, they must have the capacity for self-management, proactivity, critical capacity, communication skills and the capacity for planning, organization and time management.

In general, no firm asks that they be graduates of a specific university. “Junior lawyers are the future generations of law and their hiring should not be subject to the institutions in which they are trained, nor how old they are, much less if they have small children. Well, in no scenario can Constitutional Rights be violated,” said Jiménez.

According to our Career Plan, to be promoted from junior to senior category, you must have more than four years of work experience after graduation, meet the performance standards required by the firm annuallyobtain good results in performance evaluations, achieve the assigned goals, demonstrate adequate management of clients and situations, demonstrate development skills of more junior lawyers”, assured the PPU Human Management area.
