In the early hours of April 25, 2024, a large-scale power outage occurred on Miyakojima, affecting the lives of citizens. According to Okinawa Electric Power, the power outage was restored eight and a half hours later.
According to Okinawa Electric Power, there was a power outage across Miyakojima from around 3:12 a.m. on April 25, 2024, and at one point approximately 25,500 homes were without power.
Due to the power outage, the general outpatient clinic at Miyako Prefectural Hospital will be closed until 1:30 p.m., and surgeries and examinations scheduled for April 25, 2024 have been cancelled.
Elementary and junior high schools in Miyakojima City cut classes in the morning and closed in the afternoon because school lunches were not available, and four prefectural high schools closed in the morning, with regular classes in the afternoon except for special needs schools. .
Among the supermarkets on the island, San-A, Aeon Ryukyu, A Corp, and Kanehide temporarily suspended operations, but all stores are now open as usual.
Miyako Airport, police, and fire departments were not affected as their own power generators were in operation. According to Okinawa Electric Power, the power outage was resolved at 11:42 a.m., and an accident recovery task force has been set up to investigate the cause.
