Larraga demands the opening of a new line of model D

by time news

The families of Larragathe Association of Sortzen Mothers and Fathers and representatives of the Linguistic Rights Observatory met last Tuesday in front of the gates of the San Miguel de Larraga public school to request the opening of a new model D line in the center.

Through a letter, the group explains that as they did in their day in Mendigorria, they want the model of linguistic immersion in Basque to be opened in the Larraga public school so that the children of Larraga can study in Basque without having to give up going to their local school.

“For decades, the txikis of the town have had to move abroad to learn Euskera. Despite having a public school in the town itself, several families had to choose between taking them to Tafalla to learn Basque or staying in the town school, giving up studying in Basque”, they denounce.

In addition, the community assures that they are left “in the usual dichotomy” and that they want to make them see that they have the right to study in Basque, but their right is “conditional or limited”. Faced with reality, this year, 12 families have requested the opening of model D and, for this, in July they registered instances in the education department. “We have not yet received an official response and this Thursday, we will have a meeting with the General Director of Education, Gil Sevillano. We must bear in mind that the pre-registration period begins in February and we do not want the same situation to be repeated that has occurred in other localities: when the time came they could not pre-register their children in model D at the town school”, they relate
