In a new interview with TVK (via Blabbermouth.net), the drummer of Metallica, Lars Ulrichhas spoken about the tour “M72” of those in San Francisco and the concept of “No Repeat Weekend”, under whose rules the San Francisco band will offer two dates in each city on its roadmap, yes, with two radically different repertoires in which no song is repeated. The drummer is not, however, sure that his audience has understood the concept.

“It’s definitely exciting, definitely a bit crazy. But it’s got a fun spirit, of course, and it’s a bit overwhelming, to be honest.”

“The concept came from a gentleman named Danny Wimmer, who runs a number of festivals in America”he explained. “And I think about four years ago, he came to see us and asked us if we would play six or eight of his festivals, and he told us that we would do a festival bookend. We would play Friday and Sunday and another would play Saturday. We would play Friday and Sunday. Sunday – completely different sets – and we would close the festival. It sounded interesting and unique and cool, so we said yes. And we had six, seven, maybe eight of them scheduled for 2020. Then came the pandemic and the lockdown and obviously all of that disappeared. By the time we got to fall ’21, we did three of them. It was fun. We survived. And I felt like I connected with the audience. It was an opportunity for us to do some kind of experiment with a blank canvas to start over. new, which is always fun and appreciated in Metallica. So when we were trying to figure out how to promote the next record, we thought this concept of going all over the world and playing two nights in every city would be fun.”

“So, here we go. ‘No Repeat Weekend’. We’re not going to repeat any song from one show to the next. Sounds like a really good idea. Also, obviously, it’s going to be a lot of work. But I think it’s going to be fun. I think the noise is good.”

“I’m not sure that today, to be honest, everyone really understands what we’re doing”Lars admitted. “I’m not sure we understand what we’re doing. But I’ve been hearing myself talk about it for a couple of weeks now and certainly everyone on our team is doing everything they can to spread the word. It started like one ticket for two shows and then we left some one-day tickets available for people who couldn’t make it to both. Obviously, two shows is a big commitment for a lot of people, I understand that.”

“I don’t know if people who buy a ticket for just one day understand that they may not play certain of their favorite songs, so to speak, that they won’t listen to. I don’t know if they fully understand that concept and I don’t know if it matters. It’s a fun experiment, after all, and when you’ve been playing as long as we have and doing as many shows as we’ve done, I think it’s important to keep coming up with new ideas to keep it fresh for the fans and for ourselves. So I hope this comes. It’s very exciting”.
