Heavy Rainfall Causes Flooding in Las Vegas Valley

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Severe flooding caused chaos and disruption across the Las Vegas Valley on Friday, leaving several drivers stranded as their vehicles stalled in standing water. At the intersection of Cheyenne Avenue and North Las Vegas Boulevard, numerous cars were left immobilized due to the excessive rainfall.

Theresa Nilles and Michelle Good, employees at the nearby Rebel convenience store, expressed their dismay at the severity of the flooding. They reported that the cafe, bathroom, and office were all flooded, causing significant damage to their workplace. Nilles and Good stated that every time such flooding occurs, their business slows down, and they are left to clean up the aftermath. “This is the worst I’ve seen so far… it’s pretty bad,” said Good.

Marybess McGee, a Las Vegas resident, found herself stuck in her flooded vehicle and had to call paramedics to assist her in reaching a dry area. McGee mentioned how challenging it was for her to exit the car due to her limited mobility. “It was crazy… it’s just scary,” she said. Many other drivers sought assistance and called for towing from the Wendy’s parking lot near the intersection.

However, amidst the chaos, there were acts of heroism. Eric Thomas, another Las Vegas resident, took initiative and pushed a stalled vehicle to safety after his own car was affected by the flooding. Expressing concern for the occupants of the stranded vehicle, Thomas emphasized the importance of not driving through flooded areas. “Just stop and don’t drive. It’s not worth it,” he urged.

To help mitigate the situation, the Nevada Department of Transportation dispatched crews to the scene on Friday evening. The National Weather Service of Las Vegas also issued a flash flood warning in effect until 9:30 p.m. Friday. The severity of the rainfall and resulting floods highlights the need for caution and preparedness during extreme weather conditions.

Residents and viewers were urged to remain vigilant and share any videos showcasing the impact of severe weather in the area. The Las Vegas Valley continues to grapple with the aftermath of the heavy rainfall and flooding, reminding everyone of the importance of staying safe during inclement weather.
