Walter Cunningham, 90, the last former astronaut on NASA’s first successful Apollo 7 space mission, died early Tuesday in Houston.

Two men aboard Apollo 7 in 1968, US Air Force Maj. Don F. Eichel and US Navy Capt. Walter M. Shira, have already died.

In this case, Walter Cunningham (90), the last astronaut of the Apollo 7 space mission, passed away due to old age and health.

His death was confirmed by NASA spokesman Bob Jacobs. He died Tuesday (Jan. 3), his wife, Todd Cunningham, said in a statement, but did not give a cause of death.

Apollo 7 was a great step towards space, leading to the moon landing.

Cunningham was one of three astronauts on the Apollo 7 mission in 1968.

NASA said in a statement that the three astronauts made a perfect trip to the space agency to send the next crew during the Apollo 8 mission.

“On the Apollo 7 mission, Walt and his crew made history and paved the way for the Artemis generation we see today,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. “NASA will always remember his contributions to our nation’s space program and extend our condolences to the Cunningham family.” .

“Walt Cunningham was a fighter pilot, a physicist, and a businessman. But, above all, he was an explorer.”
