About 500,000 are sold every year.
A financial crunch before the ban? While looking in all directions for savings and new income, Michel Barnier and his teams announce the increase in a tax that some families would have done without. A choice that seems driven by the desire to tighten legislation on equipment. And many French people are trying to install it at home. A decision also taken under pressure from the European Union.
It is a small and discreet line but one that has a significant impact on the wallet and which we never look at: the VAT rate displayed at the bottom of the invoice. In France, it is normally 20%. But some products benefit from a reduced rate of 5.5%, which allows you to reduce the amount of the check you have to write.
For several years, families who purchase gas boilers with very high energy performance have benefited from this reduced tariff. Installing this method of heating at home results in reduced taxation. Problem, the European Union has said stop. And if France postponed the deadline for a long time, it decided to do so starting from 2025. To respect supranational rules and, above all, to bring in some extra money.
From 1 January 2025 the purchase of a gas boiler will therefore be taxed at 20%. Even if manufacturers do not increase prices, or increase them only slightly, the payment process will increase considerably. For example, for a boiler with very high energy performance paid 5,000 euros in 2024, its price will rise to 5,690 euros in 2025.
A choice of no small importance on the part of the government. Sales of gas boilers are decreasing over the years (around 500,000 in 2022) because it is now forbidden to install them in new homes. The declared objective is to encourage the reduction of CO2 emissions by installing 100% electric equipment. Last year the idea of a total ban on gas boilers was even mooted before being abandoned. But until when?
