Three candidates are waging an all-out battle in the Suncheon, Gwangyang, Gokseong, and Gurye-eul constituencies, the biggest battlegrounds in Jeonnam for the April 10 general election.
In this constituency, Democratic Party candidate Kwon Hyang-yeop (56, female), People Power Party candidate Lee Jeong-hyeon (65), and Progressive Party candidate Yoo Hyun-joo (53, female) are engaged in a ‘three-person competition’.
The three candidates are appealing for support by traveling around the region, giving morning greetings and holding vehicle campaigns, focusing on traditional markets and intersections with high floating populations.
When meeting voters, including market merchants and citizens, they hold hands and hug each other without hesitation, expressing their earnest feelings by saying things like, “I am the right person for the job,” “I want to work like crazy,” and “I will work hard.”
Attention is being paid to whether candidate Kwon Hyang-yeop, who was leading in various public opinion polls, will continue his strong performance until the last minute.
She claims to be a traditional Democratic Party member with a long career in the party, and is aiming for the gold badge as the first female member of the National Assembly in Jeollanam-do in 46 years by ‘overcoming the Sacheon controversy head-on’ in the primary.
Candidate Kwon expressed, “I will take the lead in judging the current government and normalizing the Republic of Korea,” and added, “Please trust and choose Kwon Hyang-yeop so that he can work diligently.”
Candidate Jeong-Hyeon Lee, who has a ‘3rd term record’, is burning his will to run for a 4th term, hoping for a major breakthrough based on his influence and recognition.
Since the introduction of the single-member constituency system in 1988, he is the only Conservative Party member of the National Assembly in Gwangju and Jeonnam, and is a symbolic figure of ‘abolition of regionalism’ who served as a three-term lawmaker and party leader.
Candidate Lee emphasized regional development, saying, “I will definitely transform Suncheon (Haeryong-myeon), Gwangyang, Gokseong, and Gurye,” and “I want to work like crazy, until I die.”
Candidate Yoo Hyeon-joo, who is rallying support base centered on workers, is trying to target voters by emphasizing that she is an alternative party to the two major parties.
Candidate Yoo, who served as a member of the South Jeolla Provincial Assembly and serves as the chairman of the Gwangyang City Committee of the Progressive Party, is appealing for support by emphasizing the theory of judging the regime.
Candidate Yoo said, “Rather than sweeping the Democratic Party, please make sure to create one seat for the Progressive Party,” and added, “By becoming one seat out of 100, I will be a new wind of change in the lethargic Honam politics.”
The population of Suncheon, Gwangyang, Gokseong, and Gurye-eul constituencies (as of March) is 55,996 in Haeryong-myeon, Suncheon, 152,779 in Gwangyang-si, 26,768 in Gokseong-gun, and 24,196 in Gurye-gun.
Candidates are focusing on developing strategies to dominate these areas, as Haeryong-myeon in Suncheon, Gwangyang-eup in the old city center (48,058 people), and Jungma-dong in Gwangyang-si in the new city center (57,548 people) appear to have the highest population.
The old city center is in fact a traditional democratically strong area, but there is also a view that in the case of Haeryong-myeon, which has a high proportion of young people, and Jungma-dong, which is adjacent to businesses, the votes of the conservative class will be reflected to a large extent.
The three candidates plan to continue their official campaign until midnight on this day.
