Last-Minute Own Goal Denies Marítimo Victory Against Chaves in Stalemate

by time news

Marítimo and Chaves drew 1-1 this Sunday in a match of the third round of the Segunda Liga, a result that punishes the Madeira team’s lack of effectiveness in front of goal.

The first goal of the match belonged to Martim Tavares, in the 58th minute, giving the green-reds the lead, but already during stoppage time, at 90’+4, an own goal from Rodrigo Borges shocked the stands, resulting in a punishing tie for Marítimo’s greater dominance.

With this result, the lion of Almirante Reis equals Leixões and Feirense, with five points, but remains two points behind the leading duo, composed of Ac. Viseu and Penafiel, while Chaves, still without a win, now occupies the 14th place, with the same two points as FC Porto B.

Still unbeaten in the championship, the Madeirans started with pressure, but it was the team led by Marco Alves that had the best goal opportunity in the first half, in the 10th minute, through Ktatau, who headed just past the post after a cross from Kiko Pereira.

Almost always in control of the match, with more ball possession and territorial dominance, Fábio Pereira’s team struggled to break down the Transmontano block, creating only one chance in the first 45 minutes, with Fransérgio, free in the area, shooting wide.

After the break, the Marítimo team returned better, having a golden opportunity to open the scoring in the 54th minute, with a header hitting the crossbar from newly-substituted Martim Tavares.

At 58′, in the best phase for the islanders, Martim Tavares turned promise into action, as the forward for Portugal’s youth national teams opened the scoring with a header after a pinpoint assist from Francisco França.

Already in stoppage time, when nothing suggested what was to come, in a persistent play by Chaves, which came following a free kick taken from the left, it was Rodrigo Borges himself, in desperation, who introduced the ball into his own net at 90’+4, fixing the tie that remained until the end.
