Sales of party products have so far been in decline. But a burst remains possible.

It will take patience this Saturday to go Christmas shopping in supermarkets. As the 24th and 25th fall on a weekend, a large number of customers will wait until the last minute to shop for food. Purchases should ramp up throughout the week, until the peak of the 24th. At least that is what the retailers are hoping for, because the season has not started well.

Sales of products traditionally popular at Christmas are down sharply compared to last year. Thus sales of fresh foie gras, down 27% according to the IRI institute, those of champagne (- 19%) or even sales of frozen logs (- 17%). “Is this a sign that the French are restricting their consumption or that they are delaying their purchases? It’s still hard to say,” says Emily Mayer, director at IRI. The Football World Cup was able to divert customers from Christmas shopping: sales of crisps and pizzas are doing very well.
