‘Kadali Kankadali Chenkadali Pooveno..Kavilil Poomadamulloru Penpoo Veno Pookkara ..’ An eternally beautiful song that has conquered even the heartbeats of the listeners who are not satisfied with what they hear. Probably a factor as to why they’re doing so poorly. The song was sung by Lata Mangeshkar, who has been the musical voice of Bollywood actresses for seven decades.

Lata Mangeshkar sang ‘Kadali Kankadali’ for the 1974 film ‘Nell’. This was the first Malayalam song of the beloved singer. Salil Chowdhury composed the music for the movie which was directed by Ramu Kariyat. Written by Vayalar Rama Varma. Jayabharathi was the heroine of the film.

In 1957, when ‘Sri Ramulu Naidu’ directed his own Tamil film ‘Malaikallan’ in Malayalam under the title ‘Thaskararaveeran’, there was a Hindi song called ‘Kabhi Khamosh Rahte Te’ (re-singing from ‘Azad’). It was sung by Lataji. In 1974, Hariharan directed the film ‘Ayalathe Sundari’ which also had a Hindi song beginning with ‘Kora Kagas’. Lataji was also the female voice in the duet.

In 1942, Lataji first sang the song ‘Nachu Ya Gothe, Khelu Na Mani Haas Bari’ in the Marathi film ‘Kidi Hasal’. Lata’s first Hindi song was ‘Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu’ from the 1943 film Gajabahu. The song ‘Mera Dil Thoda’ composed by Ghulam Haider from the movie Majboor (1948) was sung by Lata Mangeshkar as a singer. Later, the film world witnessed Lataji’s rise to stardom in India.
