Late diagnosis slows down drug research

Currently, the disease is only diagnosed when typical symptoms such as movement disorders already appear. At this point, however, the disease process in the brain has already been going on for many years.

“So we’re actually too late with the diagnosis, because many nerve cells have already perished,” says Kathrin Brockmann, study employee and head of the Parkinson’s outpatient clinic at the University Hospital in Tübingen. Active ingredients that prevent the pathological processes then only have a limited effect. This also makes it so difficult to find effective drugs for Parkinson’s disease.

With the new tests, new drugs could be used at a much earlier and therefore cheaper point in time.

The test works best with brain water, which can be obtained from the spinal cord canal. However, the researchers are also examining less invasive options by trying to detect alpha-synuclein in blood, skin and mucous membranes.
