The governments of Dominican Republic, Panama, Costa Rica y Ecuador issued a joint statement in which they stressed the need “to abide by the will of the Venezuelan people” in the presidential elections taking place in Venezuela this Sunday.
In the statement, the Alliance for Development in Democracy (ADD), made up of the four countries, urged the Venezuelan authorities “to comply with the Inter-American Democratic Charter.” This request comes in response to the statements of the president Nicolas Maduro, who suggested the possibility of a “bloodbath” if the government loses the elections.

The ADD made a firm call to ensure that the elections “be free, fair and transparent”and emphasized the importance of allowing access to international observers. In this context, the alliance rejected the actions of the Venezuelan government that have limited “the entry of several former Latin American presidents, thus preventing a adequate supervision of the electoral process.”
