He explained that the Dutch Internet service provider has sued the Council of Europe in the Court of the European Union for imposing sanctions against “Sputnik” and “Russia Today”.

Latvia is also involved in the legal proceedings. A month ago, NEPLP together with colleagues from the Ministry of Justice went to Luxembourg, where they participated in a court hearing, explained Āboliņš.

According to him, the Dutch cable operator has argued that he does not provide content and that his business is being damaged in this way. On the other hand, Latvia’s arguments are that the damage caused by the distribution of this type of content is incompatible with the business interests and freedom of speech of the particular entrepreneur, as this propaganda causes much greater damage.

Aboliņš said that the court verdict should be in the near future. He is confident that he will succeed in court.

On the other hand, in case of loss, these resources will return to the entire European Union, said Āboliņš. At the same time, he emphasized that Latvia’s laws were revised immediately after the start of the Russian war in Ukraine, and within a few weeks a way would be found to block these resources again.

He admitted that it was the first time that NEPLP was involved in such a large-scale legal proceeding.
