Latvia Weather: Strong Frost & Cold Temperatures Forecast

Riga – Latvia is bracing for continued cold weather, with temperatures expected to plunge as low as -24°C in eastern regions Wednesday night, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center. While the western part of the country will see partly cloudy skies with occasional breaks, eastern Latvia anticipates partly cloudy conditions.

Frigid Temperatures and Gusty Winds Forecast for Latvia

A prolonged cold snap is settling over Latvia, with no significant warming in sight for the next week.

  • Nighttime temperatures will range from -6°C to -24°C depending on location.
  • Moderate easterly to southeasterly winds will bring gusts up to 15 m/s along the Gulf coast.
  • No thaw is expected over the weekend, and precipitation is forecast to return next week.
  • Daytime temperatures will peak around -4°C to -15°C.

During the day, cloud cover will increase across much of Kurzeme and Vidzeme, with a chance of light snowfall in eastern areas. A light easterly wind will accompany the chill. Nighttime lows will range between -13°C and -18°C, though Kurzeme will experience slightly milder conditions between -6°C and -11°C. Eastern regions could see temperatures plummet to -20°C to -24°C. Daytime temperatures are forecast to reach around -10°C to -15°C, with the warmest conditions in Kurzeme and northern Vidzeme (-4°C to -9°C).

On Friday, similar winds will blow across Kurzeme, with gusts up to 14 m/s. Thursday night temperatures are predicted to be -10°C to -15°C, falling to -3°C to -8°C in northwestern regions. Daytime temperatures on Thursday will rise to -4°C to -9°C. Friday’s temperature range will be smaller, with both nighttime and daytime temperatures between -6°C and -11°C.

Looking ahead, easterly winds will continue to funnel cold air into Latvia over the weekend, meaning no significant warming is anticipated in the coming week. The dry spell is expected to end at the beginning of next week, with precipitation forecast across the entire country.

Will Latvia see a return to milder temperatures soon? Not likely. current forecasts indicate a continuation of the cold pattern, with no immediate thaw expected.
