This cultural and humanitarian project, the launch of which took place in the presence of the Advisor to His Majesty the King and Founding President of the Essaouira-Mogador Association, Mr. André Azoulay, the governor of the province of Tétouan, and a host of academicians, researchers and elected officials, is part of a fruitful partnership between Abdelmalek Essaâdi University, the municipality of Tétouan, the Essaouira-Mogador Association and the Center for Studies and research on Hebrew law in Morocco, with the support of the province of Tetouan.
The Tétouan-Essaouira cultural university will aim to study issues related to intercultural and interreligious dialogue, as well as their strengthening, through the prism of universal values, in addition to analyzing social, cultural and historical transformations, and to highlight their links with cultural and social traditions.
In addition, the university sets itself the objectives of facilitating and encouraging the understanding of social, political, cultural and educational changes, of highlighting the value of culture as a pillar of economic and social development and of contributing to understanding values, through strengthening mutual respect of cultures, as well as support for innovation.
In a statement to the press, Mr. Azoulay stressed that the cities of Tetouan and Essaouira are celebrating their journey which has matured during a remarkable year, noting that this journey was sealed by the launch of this cultural university, placed under the supervision of the Abdelmalek Essaâdi University.
“This new generation cultural project between two cities embodies a national ambition placed at the heart of the foundations of our identities and the social modernity of our social relations in Morocco” he said, rejoicing at the launch of this cultural university, which aims to give more content and ambition to cooperation between Tetouan and Essaouira.
For his part, the president of the Abdelmalek Essaâdi University, Bouchta El Moumni, affirmed that the Tetouan-Essaouira cultural university constitutes a mechanism for teaching the authentic cultural heritage of Morocco in general, and of these two cities in particular, for the benefit of pupils and students, and to promote scientific research around this age-old heritage.
Mr. El Moumni also noted that the cultural university is an opportunity for academic and scientific actors, as well as for the inhabitants of the two cities, to organize scientific and literary meetings in various fields to highlight the multiple cultural tributaries of Morocco and its rich tangible and intangible heritage.
For his part, the president of the Center for Studies and Research on Hebrew Law in Morocco and member of the Tétouan-Essaouira Cultural University, Abdellah Ouzitane, affirmed that the launch of this university is a “great occasion” which marks the centrality of culture in the partnership between Tetouan and Essaouira, noting that this initiative is part of the 3rd Forum of Mediterranean-Andalusian Civilizations, which is being held on February 23 and 24 in Tetouan.
This forum, under the theme “Tétouan-Essaouira: history, culture and common memory at the heart of Morocco’s social modernity”, focuses mainly on knowledge and cultural renewal.
The second day of this meeting will be devoted to field visits to several historical sites and monuments in Tetouan, including the old bus station, Mohammed V Avenue (El Ensanche district), the Al Matamir district and the Kasbah.
